Layering Rugs, Throws and Cushions for a Softer Home

Soft furnishings are the quickest way to warm a room. Learn how to mix textures, patterns and colours so the layers look relaxed rather than cluttered.

If a room feels a little cold or unfinished, soft furnishings are often the answer. Rugs, throws, cushions and curtains add warmth, quiet echoes and invite people to sit down and stay. The trick is to layer them so the room feels relaxed and generous rather than busy.

Start from the floor up

A rug anchors the seating area and defines the room. Choose one large enough for the front legs of every sofa and chair to rest on it, which pulls the furniture together into one cozy group. On hard floors, a felt underlay keeps the rug in place and adds extra softness underfoot.

For a layered look, place a smaller patterned or textured rug over a larger plain one, such as a vintage style rug over a natural jute base.

Mix textures before patterns

Texture is the secret to a room that feels warm. Combine smooth and nubbly, matte and soft sheen: chunky knit, linen, velvet, boucle and wool all sit beautifully together. Even a room in a single colour feels rich when the textures vary.

  • Pair a chunky knit throw with smooth linen cushions.
  • Add a velvet cushion for a touch of depth and glow.
  • Use a woven basket to hold spare blankets within reach.

Use a simple pattern formula

When mixing patterns, vary the scale. Choose one large pattern, one medium pattern and one small pattern or stripe, then tie them together with a shared colour. Plain cushions placed between patterned ones give the eye a place to rest.

Pick one colour from your largest pattern and repeat it in at least two other places in the room.

Change the layers with the seasons

Swap heavy wool throws and velvet cushions for cotton and linen when the weather warms, then bring the cozy layers back as the evenings draw in. Storing seasonal textiles in a chest or under the bed keeps the room feeling fresh all year.

Finish with curtains and light

Full length curtains hung just below the ceiling make windows feel taller and rooms feel softer. Pair them with warm lamp light at different heights and your layers will glow in the evening.
